Baking Christmas cookies in February is pretty normal

It’s Sunday evening. Work tomorrow….

I haven’t blogged in a few days so I have the whole weekend to write about. First up, Friday evening.

I went to The Wrekids release show at The Thunderbird. The two members of this little band are a husband & wife duo and are actually going to be DJ-ing our wedding!! I’m very excited that they’ve agreed to do it for us because they’re funny and awesome! I’m also excited to be saving some $$ by not hiring a regular DJ.

The Wrekids:

They took us on a lyrical journey:

Good stuff!

Next band up was Nik Westman & the Central Plains:

I’m pretty sure Nik Westman (on guitar) is a chef at Kaya in the Strip District. See this blog post totally relates to food.

If you live in Pittsburgh, or near Pittsburgh or if you want to take a road trip to Pittsburgh, The Central Plains have their CD release show March 5th at the Thunderbird again. I will be there!

Aaron is on stage in this picture….

The last band was Meeting of Important People.

The show Friday night was lots of fun! My friend Laura came out plus a bunch of other friends including LYDIA, who has her own little blog and it was her birthday. Happy Birthday Lydia!!!!

Saturday morning, Aaron and I had an appointment at the florist in Leechburg for our wedding flowers. The florist, Vicky, was AWESOME and we’re all set on the flowers now and in budget!

After our floral appointment, we were feeling productive so we stopped at The Addison House in Leechburg for some lunch and to check out their catering menu. We’re hoping to find a caterer in Leechburg for the wedding. It’ll be easier than transporting food from the city and cheaper plus we want to support Leechburg! It’s a sweet little town. I’m pretty sure Aaron and I are going to move there and open a bakery.

You know, maybe.

Saturday evening, we practiced our baking skills with a few friends.

It was Sara’s birthday! Happy Birthday Sara!! I think she reads the blog…

We all wore aprons:

Decorating cookies on a Saturday night was actually more fun than it sounds. It was a great time!

Today… Aaron and I had breakfast (and I tasted his BACON) and then we were pretty lazy all day. I took a nap around 4 then woke up at 5 and decided to run OUTSIDE since it was 40 degrees! I put on 5 layers…

Tank top, long-sleeve t-shirt, regular tshirt, thin running long-sleeve shirt, & Penguin’s hoodie plus running tights on the bottom.

I haven’t run outside in months so I kind of thought the run would be terrible but it wasn’t actually too bad. I had to dodge some icy patches and run on the road for a bit but I ended up doing 4.5 slow miles. I forgot how AWESOME running outside is compared to the treadmill. It made me happy to be out there. I probably had too many layers on because I came back covered in sweat but I’d rather be hot than cold running. I didn’t take a picture of the Garmin after this run but those pictures will be back come Spring. Don’t worry.

And now I’m sitting on the couch blogging and doing laundry. Time to put clothes in the dryer. Hope you all had a great weekend!

Birthday/Valentine’s Day Weekend

So I tend to not blog over the weekends. I’m not sure why. I think blogging on weekdays seems to help me unwind whereas on the weekends, I’m already unwound… yes? Sort of makes sense.

Anyway, it’s Tuesday morning, 6:31 AM. I had plans of going to the gym but that went out the window because I’m tired and just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Then I thought about doing yoga because I downloaded a 60 minute class (Power Vinyasa Flow #5) from yogadownload.com but that went out the window too because I was feeling lazy. So here I am, drinking coffee and blogging.

Friday night, Aaron and I had had dinner with his parents, his brother and his brother’s girlfriend. Sorry for the poor picture quality. It was dark in there. We went to Tandoor Grill which for you Pittsburghers, is located on Centre Ave in North Oakland at the end of Craig Street. There is actually another Indian restaurant called Tamarind about a block away too. I like them both. I’m pretty sure they’re both byob also so check them out. I think I may like the food at this one a wee bit better than Tamarind. I had the baigan bartha but will spare you the picture because it was terrible and really, mushed up eggplant isn’t very visually appealing.

One picture for you — Aaron’s brother & his gf:

Saturday was spent walking about three miles through Shadyside (to buy Aaron a belt for his birthday), to Whole Foods and then back. My car is still stuck in the garage so errands had to be done on foot. It wasn’t a bad walk though.

Aaron turned 29 on Valentine’s Day!!!! Happy Birthday Husband!!!!

Anyway…

For Aaron’s and my birthdays this year, we decided to forgo big gift-giving and put all that money toward the wedding. I told him I would cook him MEAT for his birthday dinner though.

Enter the chicken:

And the huge mess that I made:
IMG_5958.JPG

Chicken had it’s own cutting board. You forget about things like e.coli when you don’t cook meat ever… I did have a meat mallet either so I ended up covering the chicken with plastic wrap and pounding it with my fist. Ha. It worked.

Dinner came together pretty well. I used this Tyler Florence recipe for the chicken parmesan subbing dried basil for fresh but everything else was the same. I also made eggplant parmesan for myself (round dish on the right). I breaded the eggplant with panko breadcrumbs and then baked it for 20 minutes. Then I covered the eggplant with sauce, slices of fresh mozzarella and sprinkled with parmesan. Then it was baked for 15 minutes at 400 degrees until bubbly.

I also made baked sweet potatoes fries. Weird, I know.

Dinner was great! Aaron was happy:

Pooooor lighting…

Sunday morning, we went to 8:30 AM church then drove past Coca Cafe but quickly decided against it due to the likelihood that we would run into five million people that we know plus it hadn’t even opened yet. We decided to hit up Costco in the Waterfront for mass amounts of produce and 40 lbs of kitty litter then go to Eat n’ Park instead…

IMG_5969.JPG

I had two eggs over-easy plus 6-grain toast and a cup of fruit in place of the bacon/sausage:

IMG_5970.JPG

I don’t remember what we did the rest of the day but around 5, Aaron had band practice then a show in Shadyside which I skipped out on in favor of sitting around in pajamas and watching The Holiday on TBS.

Monday… I was off work!!! Bank holiday!!! Aaron dropped me off at the gym on the way to work. I ran about 4.5 miles at varying speeds in the completely empty gym then came home to watch Rachel Ray and eat GIANT shredded wheat biscuits.

Alright, it’s 6:47 now. I really need to get ready for work. Have a great day!!!!

Bake It Pretty, Color Me Bad

Thursday night!

Sooo glad that tomorrow is Friday and I have off work Monday!! President’s Day. Yes!

Moving on…

I have a couple pictures from MOIP’s show Sunday. It was at Border’s in East Liberty and partially broadcast on 91.3 WYEP. I ended up walking to this show because my car is a piece of junk and rear wheel drive so I never would have made it in the snow. It’s only about a 1.5 mile walk and I got a ride home so it wasn’t too bad.

Almost the exact same picture. The exciting thing in this picture is you can see Matt playing the tambourine with his feet. Talent.

I’ve also been on a bit of an omelet kick lately. I usually just make a scrambled egg concoction when I make eggs but I set out to try to make an actual omelet over the weekend and it was pretty successful so I made another for dinner the other night. Omelet and Twitter.
IMG_5941.JPG

So this morning, I woke around 5:30 and sat around reading blogs until about 6 then got dressed in gym clothes, packed my bags and caught the 6:33 bus downtown. I got downtown around 6:50, took the escalator down to my gym and it was CLOSED. Lame. Soooo I had to wander into work unshowered, in gym clothes at 7 AM! Suuucks. I changed into work clothes and sort of did my hair in the office bathroom and then sulked while eating my oatmeal. The sign on the door said they would be opening at 9 so I figured I’d just take an early lunch and gym and shower.

This brightened my day though… My Bake It Pretty items!!! I ordered the cupcake liners and pastry tips for the wedding cupcakes and they were delivered to the office today. SO EXCITED! First of all, a note on Bake It Pretty. It’s the sweetest website ever. They have tons of unique cupcake liners and decorating items as well as a bunch of other stuff that I want but can’t afford because I have to pay for a wedding. Anyway, check it out if you’re into this type of stuff.

And they included a few free bakery tags! Buying from small companies like this makes me so happy.

Alright it’s now 10:23 PM. WAY past my bed time! Aaron stopped over and hung out for a bit and then said goodnight about 40 minutes ago. I’ve just been sitting around reading blogs ever since and not going to sleep…

Bed now. Goodnight. FRIDAY!
