Kitchen Renovation Update

Good Morning!

I was planning to post about Resting on Sundays today but my written post is on another computer so that will have to wait for another day. Instead of a word heavy post, it’s going to be a picture heavy one.

Saturday, Aaron and I woke up early and starting work on the kitchen. Aaron started working on painting and spackling the kitchen while I started to sand our future kitchen island.

We picked up this piece of furniture a few months ago from Construction Junction with plans to make it into an island. We shopped around a bit for new kitchen islands but the ones we liked were all $800+. That’s almost how much we paid for the cabinets, countertop, sink, and faucet combined so that was out. I saw this little piece of furniture on Construction Junction’s website and we drove over to check it out. $65 later, we have our kitchen island. It’s actually supposed to be a bar so all of the sides are finished.

Here it is before:

And here it is after power sanding with 60 and 80 grit sandpaper plus one coat of paint:

While the island was drying, I started painting everything I could find… We have about 7 little paint samples from trying to pick a wall color so I used one to paint our banana hanger. I also painted our paper towel rack to match the island.

Here are four of the seven colors we tried. We didn’t end up with any of those except the banana hanger got the one on the bottom right. It’s Behr “Aegean Sea.”

Aaron spackled. He was using the banana stand as a light holder until I stole it.

And skip ahead about 7 hours and we have two shelves up!!!

It looks almost finished aside from the still visible screws on the top shelf…

But if you zoom out… you see we only painted about two feet of wall.

If you want to a refresher on what it looked like before, check out the kitchen demo.

We brought the not quite finished island in last night (I was painting on the porch) and set it in place. It’s going to have a counter top attached (it’s sitting in the corner of that picture) soon plus the doors will be reattached and new hardware to match our cabinets. We immediately grabbed my Kitchen Aid mixer to see if it would fit. Yes!

I still have one more coat of paint to put on the island then we have to put the countertop on and put it back together then it will be ready to go! Aaron is planning to run electric to the island and add an outlet to the side. I can’t wait!
